It's just a logo and an HTML page, and yet after testing several languages, several tools, and above all spending hours telling myself that I've got to "get my ass in gear", I'm tooling up and taking online courses in the hope of succeeding in creating some semblance of a game, with my own hands πŸ’ͺ

To motivate myself, I wanted to create a brand, as if I were going to set up a studio all by myself! Except that I don't have any artistic talent, I can't draw anything except geometrical figures, and even then! 🀣 But never mind, I want to do something and learn a few techniques using open source tools and online courses. I'm inspired by what I see here and there, and above all I admire all those who take the plunge, like my friend Julien and his team with their "Revanche studio" project ❀️

As usual, I take out my little notebook and start scribbling something:

So here I am, downloading Inkscape, looking for tutorials, elements, colors, textures... and off I go! Well, I didn't keep the creation history, but you can imagine that I went through it several times before I had something I was happy with 😝

I create a small HTML page, upload it to my main NGINX server, buy and configure the domain name... and a few hours later the idea comes to life on https://www.furrygames.fr 🌟

  • "Furry" because I'm a bear myself ;
  • the colors of the MLM flag because "its role extends beyond being a symbol; it is a tool for empowerment, a declaration of pride, and a call for acceptance" and these days, more than ever, I want to play my part in the LGBTQIA+ community
  • and it was also important for me to create something out of the ordinary, especially not β€œflat” ;

If the project worked and I could share it with other people, I wouldn't expect them to be as hairy as me 🀣 but to adhere to the same principles at least.

The why

Once I'd done all that... I didn't do anything at all! It's not the first time I've spent time dreaming up a logo, buying yet another domain name and promising myself wonders without ever achieving anything 😝 On my previous blog I wrote something about learning Rust by creating a small app that could federate. So I did take Rust courses, I even managed to compile some cool stuff, to understand bits of ActivityPub protocol, but I was missing something to keep the flame of motivation burning to fight the laziness of going further πŸ€ͺ

Would I be able, in my spare time, to start a small personal project that could emancipate me from salaried employment?! that's very tempting πŸ”₯ My head's not too shabby, I've always loved computers, and as I wrote in a previous post, I've always dreamed of one day creating my own little game. I'm far from the only one embarking on this kind of adventure. There are plenty of independent developers out there chasing their dreams, so why would I be any more successful than anyone else? I don't know, but since it only happens to those who do something, and I'm enjoying it, I'll give it a go πŸ€“

Next steps

I want to create the project from scratch and understand all the steps involved. So obviously, if I have lore in my head, names, concepts... I also and above all need assets that I'll then have to manipulate in a game engine. Obviously, I've chosen to use Blender & Godot Engine, for which I'm still taking online courses.

Right now I'm spending a lot of time on Crashsune Academy's channel, and I like his tone and the way he explains things. He's clear in his explanations, he goes into a lot of details and I can see where he's taking me, so I follow him! I'm going to have a big week's vacation soon, and I hope I'll at least manage to create a character - that's my milestone if I'm to get the chance to write a sequel to this new project...
